Twitch, the most popular game-streaming website, is to be bought by Amazon.com Inc. This article gives an inside look into the details of the deal. This is considered a very important purchase by Amazon, being that Twitch is considered the fourth largest source of peak Internet traffic in the United States. What does this mean for Twitch's gaming community? How successful or unsuccessful will this merge be?
"Amazon, not Google, will be the corporate host of Twitch, the popular game-streaming service."
"Google was widely expected to purchase the firm for around $1 billion and that deal was generally thought to be sewn up. That Amazon managed to pull off the deal is notable."
"We've also heard that Twitch had many suitors and that the Google deal fell through because Google's offer undervalued the company."The question of how this purchase will affect Twitch's gaming community is under examination to see what is to come in the following days. It will be interesting to see two different companies that provide different services come together. Amazon gives people the ability to find and buy almost anything there is to buy. Twitch, on the other hand, only provides people the chance to enjoy watching others play video games. It's a community for gamers to come together and chat about a certain game or topic.
This is actually a very intelligent purchase for Amazon.com Inc. because of the continuous increase of viewers that join Twitch's community. Twitch will allow wide exposure for Amazon and vice-versa. This will increase the amount of people going to each website and could potentially make both websites peak Internet traffic sites. Another major question is how different Twitch will look and if its will stay true to what it has always offered to their audience.

The fact that Amazon will buy Twitch stuns me a bit. I'd expect Google or Microsoft to purchase Twitch since those two companies are bigger and have more ties to video games than Amazon. I'd hope that along with purchasing Twitch Amazon would invest some money into fixing it up and making it run smoother.
ReplyDeleteAmazon is really stepping up its game in becoming a bigger company like Google. They have already expanded with Amazon MP3 and Amazon Instant Video and now they are trying to buy a website. This is a smart business move on their part. This website is starting to gain popularity and Amazon will gain some nice revenue with the partnership. Also, I am sure the website Amazon is buying will improve but keep its aesthetic and promise to the audience. This reminds me of when Yahoo bought Tumblr. The website's users were nervous about how the website would change, but all the partnership did was improve the website and make minor changes. Bigger companies buying smaller websites do benefit both sides. The smaller website with less money can fix problems that could not be fixed before, and the larger company can get revenue out of it.
ReplyDeleteBeing that Amazon isn't big into the video game market, I think they will keep Twitch the same. I don't see Amazon trying to alter a successful website, especially when their expertise in the area is lacking. Twitch will gain even more views as a result of Amazon buying it and Amazon may get some more views from being associated with Twitch. All in all, I think this move will be beneficial for both Amazon and Twitch.
